AQA for GCSE and Edexcel for Level 1 and Level 2

Introduction

Mathematics is a compulsory core subject for all students at post-16 until they have achieved a grade '5' at GCSE or equivalent. It is diverse, engaging and essential in equipping our students with the right skills for their future.

At Ashley High School we offer three different qualifications, GCSE, Level 1 and Level 2. If applicable, students will follow one of these courses, depending on their level of ability.

GCSE Foundation Course

The course will cover these areas:

  • Number and Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Probability and Statistics

The GCSE course will follow a programme dependent on the students' abilities. Other subjects may be taught to improve students' life skills as and when appropriate.

Assessment

Three 1.5 hour external examinations in the summer term of the final year of the course.

Level 1 and Level 2 Courses

These courses aim to promote mathematical thinking and problem solving skills.

Students will learn about Mathematics that is useful in everyday life and the world of work.

Level 1: a) Number, b) Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, c) Money, Time, Scales, d) Shape, Space and Position, e) Handling Data.

Assessment

1 written paper of 1 hour per unit

Level 2: Number & Measure

Assessment

2 written papers of 1 hour
